That many still live without knowing it

This text is deliberately written in feminine, and it is important to understand why. Our generation grew up under very rigid role structures. Men, to date, were educated to a large extent by mothers who transmitted to them the mandate to be the absolute suppliers, the givers of economic support. For them, personal value was linked to doing and producing outside.

The women of those same decades ago, on the other hand, were trained mainly for the care of the home and the emotional fiber of the family. However, the world changed drastically along the way. Today, the mature woman not only maintains that internal imprint of caregiver and affective support, but also went out on the market to contribute money and co-provide. The result was not an exchange of roles, but a sum: today women care and also contribute financially.

Many women today live under this double strenuous burden without consciously registering it; they simply operate automatically, believing that it is their natural obligation to be able to with everything. It is an invisible double standard that generates a very specific type of exhaustion at this stage of life. To them, to those who sustain the world at the expense of their own silence, this reflection is dedicated.

🌿 Sometimes strength is born from the fear of losing

Something quiet happens to many women: on the outside they look strong, functional, capable. They are the ones who solve, the ones who sustain family crises, those who always have a response or an action plan when the environment is shaky. But inside, that strength is not always a free or conscious choice; sometimes it is a rigid response that they learned to survive the circumstances of their history and fulfill what the world expected of them.

She was firm. He defended himself from external demands. She said what she thought clearly, not because she sought conflict or enjoyed the confrontation, but because she understood early on that, if she did not put herself in charge of the situations, no one would take care of her. It was a necessary survival strategy that, over the years and demands of adulthood, ended up becoming his main identity.

When you grow up with that mental structure, you also learn that the best way to maintain control and protect yours is to keep quiet. Not for lack of character, arguments or emotions, but because at some point along the way talking stopped seeming a useful option. Silence became the most efficient way to avoid unnecessary wear and tear and to keep things going without disturbing the peace of the home.

🦋Silence as a refuge... and as a cage

  • When she didn't tell what happened to her in her inner world, it wasn't out of indifference, pride or disinterest in the environment. It was due to an accumulated fatigue in the bones, a chronic fatigue that is not removed with a few hours of sleep.

It is that deaf heaviness of managing so many other people's realities, so many expectations and so many crossed responsibilities that, at the end of the day, you no longer have the energy or words to explain yours. The body continues to respond in the daily routine automatically, but life itself, genuine desires and personal projects are postponed in the background, waiting for a free moment that never comes because external demand never ceases.

And there comes a point in maturity where the closest ties stop feeling like a safe haven and begin to operate as a continuous value test. As if to maintain the space you occupy in the lives of others, you had to meet certain implicit conditions so as not to disappoint anyone and show that you deserve to be there:

"If I do more for the rest and take care of their problems, I make sure they value me."

"If I adapt to everything, I don't bother with my complaints and keep my needs, I avoid the risk of rejection or abandonment."

"If I solve other people's unforeseen events before they ask me and sustain the economy, I avoid criticism and external judgment.”

    ⚖️The invisible cost of disappearing

It is exactly there where silence ceases to be a protective refuge and turns into a dangerous cage. Holding the facade of the invulnerable woman who can do everything demands a very high currency of exchange: silence your own basic needs until you become invisible in your own reality. You voluntarily erase yourseless from the list of priorities so that the gear of other people's lives continues to work without friction.

You stop talking about your pains or your goals so as not to worry, so as not to make the rest uncomfortable, or simply because you assumed the role that others have the permanent right to sue and you only have the obligation to provide solutions and resources. But becoming strong at the cost of disappearing is not a virtue or a sign of love; it is a deep abandonment towards yourself. Functional silence sustains the well-being of your environment, but it does so using your own vitality as fuel. Reaching maturity with your arms full of other people's burdens and an empty heart of yourself is the result of having forgotten that you also count.

Space for reflection: To be your priority again

  • Isabel Ruiz Life Coach

This exercise does not seek to make you stop taking care of those you love or to break your ties drastically, but to stop excluding yourself from the care that you distribute so generously to the outside. Take a personal notebook and answer with total honesty, just for your eyes:

  • Identify the real weight: Think about the last two weeks of your routine. In what specific situations did you keep quiet what you really wanted, thought or felt with the sole purpose of avoiding a family conflict or to assume the economic and care responsibility of someone else? Write the details of that moment.

    1. Recognize the invisible contract: Reread the three sentences of the post ("If I do more...", "If I adapt...", "If I solve..."). Which of them operates today as the hidden rule of your daily behavior? What consequence or deep fear are you trying to avoid by acting under that mandate?

The first step back: If today you decided to climb a single step in your list of daily priorities, what would be a small concrete action, a "no" on time or a space of silence exclusive to you that you would start claiming this week without asking permission and without guilt?
