Who are you when work stops defining you?

There is a question that few people ask themselves while everything seems to be going well...
Who am I when I stop doing what everyone knows me for?
For years we respond naturally:
"I'm a lawyer." I'm an engineer "I'm a doctor"" I'm an entrepreneur"
But, if we think about it calmly, that answer speaks of our profession, not of our essence.
And we almost never question it... until life invites us to change:
A retirement.
The sale of a company.
A dismissal.
A health problem.
Or simply the desire to start a new stage.
That's when a feeling that's difficult to explain appears.
Many say:
"I feel like I don't know who I am anymore"
In reality, they have not lost their identity.
What they have lost is the space from where they expressed it.
When doing takes the place of being
Working is much more than generating income. It is a way to contribute, learn, create, serve and develop our talents.
The problem appears when all our value ends up supported by a position, a title or a company.
As long as that structure remains, we feel safe.
But when it disappears, the image we build of ourselves also wobbles.
That is why so many people live a retirement, the sale of their company or a professional change as a crisis that goes far beyond the workplace. Not because they have lost their essence, but because for years they confused the place where they expressed it with who they really were.
We are much more than a profession
Our life is made up of many dimensions.
We are our relationships.
Our values.
The way we love.
Our ability to learn.
The way we face adversity.
What arouses our curiosity.
Our spirituality.
The way we put our talents at the service of others.
Work is one of those dimensions. A very important one, without a doubt.
But it shouldn't become the only place where we build our identity.
When a single dimension occupies the entire space, any change feels like a loss of ourselves.
True reinvention begins elsewhere
We often believe that reinventing ourselves is about finding a new occupation.
However, deeper transitions do not begin with a new activity, but with a new understanding of who we are.
The question is not only:
What am I going to do now?
The question is:
Who do I want to be in this new stage of my life?
The answer completely changes the direction of the road.
Because doing is born from being.
And when the being is connected with a purpose, it always finds new ways to express itself.
It doesn't matter if they change the position, the company or the stage of life.
The purpose remains and finds new ways of expressing itself.
I don't write this from the theory. Also today I am living the moment when a professional cycle came to an end. For many years I thought that my greatest contribution was linked to the company I had built, When that chapter ended, I also had to answer an uncomfortable question: who am I now? Over time I understood that I had not lost my identity; I just needed a new way of expressing it. Thus was born my path as a mentor and coach, and later, the Expansion Movement.
Just like I was one day, many people today think that at the end of a professional stage they also ended their contribution.
Over time, some discovered something different:
His talents were still there
His experience retained value
His ability to inspire, create and serve did not depend on a position.
They just needed a new scenario to express what had always been in them
Because the being does not disappear with changes, it is discovered, strengthened and finds new ways to manifest itself throughout life.
An invitation to reflect
If tomorrow you left the job that today takes up a large part of your time and energy...
What would remain intact?
Perhaps that answer reveals what has always been with you and that no position, company, recognition or success can take away from you.
Because work can be one of the most valuable ways to express who you are.
But it should never be the place where you deposit all your identity!
There begins a life with greater freedom, a more solid identity and a reinvention that does not depend on the circumstances, but on the meaning you choose to give to each new stage.
